Michael Clarke said he would be willing to play under the captaincy Stephen Smith if selectors decided to hand over the job to Smith on full-time basis. Clark is still Australia's Test and ODI captain but Smith led the side in the final three Tests against India this summer and scored a century in each game, and secure the trophy Australia border, tennis campaign.
Smith also led Australia to victory in a game of one-day against England in Hobart when the position was suspended in ODI captain George Bailey, and again scored a century. Clark is expected to regain the captaincy when he makes his return after surgery in the hamstring, but he told Radio Triple M on Monday that he will not play under Smith selectors if you go this way.
"Most certainly I would like to," said Clark. "I feel like Smitty, because I sat in his shoes when a lot of the media are trying to call for Ricky Ponting to retire. It's certainly not personal between Smitty and I, we were friends for a long time and will continue to be. People that sit on top of all of it and I will make decisions.
"Whatever they feel is the best 11 players, and they will choose it 11. All they feel is the best captain of the team, then they will choose it if my time has ended as a player - or a captain - and then, as you know, the game is moving on. I still I think I have a lot to offer to the team, I still feel that I can play and help us succeed, but this is out of my hand. the most important thing for me is to get fit and in good health. "
The delivery Clark Smith not be different from the situation that occurred when Clark was appointed captain in 2011 and Ponting played in the side test under Clark. However, Ponting was 36 when this change took place. Clark is only 33, but not his ongoing back and hamstrings considerable doubt over cricket injuries he will play in the future.
In the past week, and it was Clark said he hoped to remain captain for the rest of his life, if you look at the determinants of him the right man for the job. At that time, he said: "I think I've earned that respect, I think I played some cricket really good and from what I have of the determinants of information really happy with my performance - personally and also with my captaincy I. 'I have heard no different at this stage."
Clark gave his return from injury in grade cricket in Sydney on Saturday, but it remains to be seen whether it will be ready for the step up to international cricket by the deadline of February 21 imposed by the selectors when he chose the squad at the World Cup.
